The Art & Life of Luigi Lucioni

The Art and Life of Luigi Lucioni, A Contribution towards a Catalogue Raisonné, published in 2006. The book is 288 pages and contains over 900 b/w photographs of Luigi Lucioni’s paintings along with 24 color plates. It contains a biography, chronology, extensive bibliography, and a listing of museum collections.

The Artist

Luigi Lucioni was born in Malnate, Italy, in 1900 and immigrated with his family to New Jersey in 1910. He studied art at the Cooper Union and was awarded a Tiffany Foundation scholarship in 1924, studying there for the next 6 years.

Lucioni was a realist painter who was known for his landscapes, still-lifes and portraits. He became known as the “painter of birches” for his depictions of the birch groves in Manchester, Vermont. He was named Painter Laureate of Vermont in the 1980s.

He died at his home and studio in New York City in 1988.

The Author

Dr. Stuart Embury is a retired family physician in Holdrege, Nebraska, who has been an avid collector of art and artists’ autograph letters since 1970. He amassed a library of 12,000 American art books which was donated to the University of Nebraska. It is housed in the Stuart P. Embury MD Library of American Art.

Dr. Embury and Luigi Lucioni became friends in 1980. Dr. Embury also wrote The Etchings of Luigi Lucioni, A Catalogue Raisonne’ in 1984. He recently published a book about Lucioni and his portrait of Ethel Waters, recently dedicated at the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, Alabama.
